Nutrition Screening Week Results announced at BAPEN 2007

BAPEN REVEALS THAT 1 in 4 OF ALL ADULTS ACROSS ALL AGE GROUPS ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL AND CARE HOMES IN THE UK AT RISK OF MALNUTRITION

  • These are the first results released from BAPEN's UK-wide survey on malnutrition on admission to care services (BAPEN NSW 2007)

  • Data was collected over three days during BAPEN NSW 2007 on more than 11,600 patients and residents admitted to 372 hospitals, mental health units and care homes in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

"More than 1 in 4 of every single adult admitted for stay in hospital, mental units or care homes is at risk of malnutrition," says Professor Marinos Elia, Chair of BAPEN and joint project lead of NSW at the launch of the results of BAPEN's Nutrition Screening Week (Tuesday 27th November, BAPEN Conference, Harrogate).

BAPEN launches web-based Information Resource - Organisation of Food and Nutritional Support in Hospital (OFNoSH)

to help Hospital Trusts respond to the Nutrition Action Plan launched yesterday by the Department of Health.

"BAPEN is delighted to be launching today (31st October 2007) its web-based information resource, aptly named OFNoSH, to support Hospital Trusts as they respond to the challenges laid down in the Nutritional Care Action Plan and in the '10 Key Characteristics of Good Nutritional Care in Hospitals'," states Professor Marinos Elia, Chair of BAPEN.

"Getting the nutrition right for patients in hospital is a bit like getting the fitness levels of a sports team up to scratch - its the sort of thing that can turn the results of a hospital from ordinary to excellent, from loser to winner," says Jeremy Powell-Tuck, Co-Chair of the BAPEN Group which developed OFNoSH.

BAPEN responds to Improving Nutritional Care Action Plan

Improving Nutritional Care - a joint Action Plan from the Department of Health and Nutrition Summit stakeholders is published today (30th October 2007).

BAPEN is one of the key stakeholders in the Nutrition Action Plan and welcomes its publication and looks forward to playing its part in its implementation.

"Nutritional Care has reached a 'tipping-point', says Professor Marinos Elia. "It is now a 'MUST have'."

A NICE/BAPEN Shared Learning Initiative

- your experience counts!

Have you had experience of implementing guidelines for nutrition such as NICE? Are you able to share that experience - whether successful or challenging? Have you a few moments to submit a short summary for consideration for BAPEN 2008 and the BAPEN website? Your professional colleagues will love to learn from your experience and BAPEN will provide the platform to disseminate that experience.

As well as being uploaded on to the BAPEN website and discussed at BAPEN Conference, successful summaries will also be forwarded to NICE for consideration for their website. Click the link below for full details. The deadlines for the applications are 30th June 2007, and 28th February and 30th June on subsequent years.
