BAPEN Medical is a core group within the British Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (BAPEN) which is primarily aimed at doctors with an interest in clinical nutrition. Traditionally, we have mainly been a core group of gastroenterologists, GI surgeons and chemical pathologists but we are looking to broaden our membership, in particular, strengthening our links with critical care and other specialties. We actively encourage all clinical staff to join our meetings.
Our aims are:
- To support the education and training of clinicians at all levels
- To encourage research & development and to foster collaborations between members’ research groups
- To foster inter-disciplinary links and collaboration between medical specialties
- To foster multi-professional links and collaboration between health professionals
We have recently established a trainees’ committee and offer a range of prestigious awards and bursaries to raise the profile of clinical nutrition at grass roots level. We organize and lead training events at national conferences as well as regional and national BAPEN events.

BAPEN Medical arranges a Study Day each year the day before the BAPEN Annual Meeting. Our study days are attended by a wide variety of professionals and attract good feedback.

BAPEN Trainee Committee was first established in 2013 as part of BAPEN medical. The committee consists of trainees from all levels in medical, surgical and critical care specialties who work together with the aim to raise awareness of BAPEN amongst trainees and develop nutrition training resources for them.
Committee members meet quarterly, mostly virtually, with an annual meeting at the BAPEN conference in November. As a committee we contribute actively to tasks including developing educational toolkits, organisation of training days and BAPEN symposia/conferences. BAPEN trainee committee has its own twitter account where we aim to keep our followers up to date with the latest nutritional guidelines and information about upcoming nutrition courses and conferences. Dr Lovesh Dyall

Lovesh is a Northwest London Gastroenterology registrar. He is currently out of programme undertaking a fellowship in Complex Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) at St Mark’s hospital, London. He has a keen interest in the role of nutrition and IBD, particularly around the onset of IBD, peri-operative period and during induction of advanced therapies.

I am a Gastroenterology Registrar in East London and am currently out-of-programme undertaking a Nutrition Fellow job at The Royal London Hospital. We are a part of the Central London Intestinal Failure Partnership. I am interested in Clinical Nutrition, Intestinal Failure and IBD. I am passionate about improving nutrition training and have recently helped run an Intestinal Failure Study Day. I love working within the Nutrition MDT!
David Leiberman

I am a General Surgery trainee in Manchester, currently working at Salford Royal. Clinical nutrition has been an interest of mine since FY1, especially in its relation to G.I. surgery. I am especially passionate about nutritional care improving surgical outcomes, and occasionally surgery improving nutritional outcomes! I hope to increase both formal and informal education and training about nutrition within surgical curricula.
Dr Charlotte Wong

I am a Gastroenterology registrar in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex deanery and completed the Advanced Nutrition Fellowship, split between St Mark’s Hospital and Addenbrooke’s Hospitals, in 2020. I am currently finishing an out-of-programme clinical research (OOPR) fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease at St Mark’s Hospital. Drawing from these experiences, I am interested in improving awareness and equity of nutrition-related learning resources for current and future trainees.

I am an IMT Trainee in Northeast London with a keen interest in nutrition. Having completed a junior clinical fellow year at Guys and St Thomas hospital I really enjoyed work done with the nutrition team guiding management of intestinal failure patients. Additionally, I am currently completing a Postgraduate certificate in clinical nutrition from the University of Aberdeen to further increase my knowledge in this growing field!

I have had an interest in the role of nutrition in improving patient outcomes since working as part of a nutrition team during my foundation years. Ultimately, I would like to pursue a career in gastroenterology with a focus on nutrition.

I’m a surgical registrar in Yorkshire currently on an OOPR studying for a PhD. I am exploring how surgeons identify malnutrition in emergency general surgery and why this is the case. Nutrition in surgical patients is often forgotten about despite many of our patients being malnourished or at high risk of being so. I hope to raise awareness, improve educational content and continue to encourage early recognition and appropriate implementation of nutrition in surgical patients who would benefit most.

Amy is a Gastroenterology Registrar training in North-West London. She is currently out of programme working as a Clinical Fellow in Intestinal Failure at Salford Royal. Her main interests include nutrition, inflammatory bowel disease and medical education.
Akash Mehta
BAPEN Trainee Committee Member
Mr Akash Mehta is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at St Mark’s Hospital. He qualified in Medicine at Leiden University in Leiden, the Netherlands and subsequently trained in surgery at VU Medical Centre in Amsterdam, with an elective rotation in Surgical Oncology at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Center in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He successfully completed senior clinical fellowships in advanced colorectal surgery at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam (peritoneal malignancy, advanced and recurrent colorectal cancer), the Peritoneal Malignancy Institute Basingstoke (peritoneal malignancy) and finally worked as MiMICC (Minimally and Maximally Invasive Colorectal Cancer) Fellow and Resident Surgical Officer at St Mark’s Hospital. As MiMICC Fellow he was a key member of the team successfully establishing the St Mark’s peritoneal malignancy programme (offering cytoreductive surgery + HIPEC to patients with peritoneal metastases of colorectal cancer).
Akash was appointed as Consultant Colorectal and Intestinal Failure Surgeon in 2019. His primary clinical interests are Intestinal Failure & Rehabilitation Surgery, surgery for enteric fistulae and complex abdominal wall pathology as well as the management of serious complications of previous abdominal surgery. He has set up and is the lead for the St Mark’s regional Abdominal Wall MDT and has successfully established a minimally invasive (robotic) abdominal wall surgery programme.
Akash is the author of a series of 11 pocketbooks covering the Dutch medical school curriculum; and is editor and one of the main authors of A Practical Guide to Peritoneal Malignancy: The PMI Manual. He is associate editor for the 2nd edition of Intestinal Failure. He has authored and co-authored numerous book chapters and papers in peer reviewed journals.
Akash’ main research and management interests include distal limb feeding (enteroclysis and fistuloclysis) as pre-operative optimisation of defunctioned bowel, outcome measurements in complex abdominal wall reconstruction and quality improvement of healthcare processes (Akash is a graduate of the LNWUH NHS Trust Improvement Fellowship Training Programme). He is a member of the Abdominal Wall Subcommittee and the Intestinal Failure Subcommittee of the Association of Coloproctologists of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI), of the BAPEN Medical committee, and co-supervisor of the St Mark’s Intestinal Rehabilitation Surgery Fellowship, the UK’s only officially accredited fellowship in this field.
Antje Teubner

Antje, originally from Germany, graduated in Medicine in 1994. She studied at the Berlin Humboldt University and the University of Dresden and gained her MD at the Medical Faculty of the Technical University of Dresden in 1995.
She undertook her postgraduate training in the UK in surgery and surgical specialties around the Northwest of England, gaining operative and medical experience in the management of critically ill patients and gained her qualification at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Miss Teubner worked since 2001 in the Intestinal Failure Unit. She is a key member of the team for being directly responsible for the day-to-day running of the unit. She oversees and coordinates the care of all medical and surgical patients on the Unit and is also practitioner in venous line management.
Miss Teubner has gained extensive experience in the management of patients with acute intestinal failure, as well as patients requiring long term intestinal rehabilitation (including vascular access management, management of high-output fistulae, short bowel and long term HPN complications).
In her role she leads the teaching and supervision of the junior doctors/clinical fellows on the unit and has expanded this remit by regularly presenting on national conferences, study days and symposiums as well as lecturing and running workshops on intestinal failure.
Antje is an Honorary University Teacher in the Faculty of Medical and Human Science in Manchester. She mentors Medical Students, regularly examines year 3, 4 and final year 5 Medical students for the University of Manchester, yearly conducts Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) for Dentistry and Medical School entry and is an Academic Adviser for students at the Manchester Medical School. She developed and run an 11-week course program providing Virtual Work Experience for A-level students in a quest to enthuse young people to decide to study medicine.
Miss Teubner became a Member of the BAPEN Medical committee in January 2019.
Her principal goal is to enhance patient care, and this is reflected by her numerous peer-reviewed publications and international presentations around quality initiatives in intestinal failure management.
Dr Tim Ambrose

Dr Tim Ambrose is a Consultant Gastroenterologist based primarily at the John Radcliffe and Churchill Hospitals in Oxford but also at the Horton General Hospital in Banbury. He qualified from the University of Edinburgh in 2006 and undertook higher training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Thames Valley region. Additionally, he spent a year undertaking specialist training in Intestinal Rehabilitation at St Mark’s Hospital, London, and in Intestinal / Multivisceral Transplant at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. His clinical practice encompasses all aspects of general gastroenterology but with particular focus on nutrition/intestinal rehabilitation and inflammatory bowel disease.
Dr Emma Murray

I am a chemical pathology (biochemistry) medical trainee in the Northern Ireland deanery. Having completed basic surgical training, I worked for 12 years as an SAS doctor in Intestinal failure (working as part of the NI regional IF team). Apart from nutrition, my interests include quality improvement and medical education. I am committed to improving both patient care and multidisciplinary staff training with regards to nutrition.
Dr Emily Clarke

Dr Emily Clarke is a Consultant Gastroenterologist working at University Hospital Southampton where she leads the Nutrition and Intestinal Failure team. She qualified from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine, London in 2007 and completed junior doctor training in London and the South East followed by Gastroenterology training in South West England. She also undertook an Advanced Training Programme in Nutrition working in Intestinal Failure at St Mark’s Hospital, London and in Intestinal and Multivisceral Transplant at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. Emily looks after patients with a range of Gastroenterology problems but particularly those with difficulties with nutrition including Intestinal Failure as part of the regional Intestinal Failure service at Southampton.
Emily has a keen interest in medical education and is very involved in teaching. She is a Royal College of Physicians College Tutor and leads the Internal Medicine Training programme in Southampton. Along with colleagues at other nutrition centres Emily established the Clinical Nutrition Webinars programme in 2023. She has been a member of the BAPEN Medical committee since February 2020 and took up the chair role in December 2023.

A recent survey of trainees revealed that more than 70% of respondents would be interested in nutrition-related career advice.
