Drug administration via enteral feeding tubes

As the number of patients being artificially fed via the enteral route increases in hospital and community, so do the risks associated with drug administration via enteral feeding tubes. Early in 2002 BAPEN established a multi professional working group led by the British Pharmaceutical Nutrition Group (BPNG) to develop information resources on this subject.

The first part of this project has produced a set of resources comprising a patient information leaflet, a GP/Community Pharmacy information leaflet and a poster.

Patient Guide

The patient information leaflet is intended to be completed by the team that advocated the use of the patients feeding tube for their drug administration. Not only will this provide valuable information for the patient but may also prompt healthcare professionals to review the patients drug therapy and seek advice where necessary.

General Practitioner Guide

The GP/Community Pharmacy information leaflet contains information surrounding formulation choice, practical and legal issues. It is proposed that it is included with the discharge information sent to the GP or given to the patient to pass to their local community pharmacy.

A Practical Guide - Poster

The A3 poster is suitable for use on the ward or in clinics. The flow diagram provides a step by step guide for safe drug administration via this route. The poster also includes basic information on legal implications, health and safety and drug interactions.
