Issued: 11 October 2009

BAPEN is calling all Hospitals, Mental Health Units and Care Homes to take part in its 3rd Nutrition Screening Week (NSW10 – 12-14 January 2010) and build the most robust dataset on malnutrition in the UK across all four seasons

BAPEN NEEDS YOU!

BAPEN needs nurses, dietitians, care managers and doctors to register their hospitals, mental health units and care homes to take part in BAPEN’s Nutrition Screening Week 10 (NSW10 12-14 January 2010) and help build the most robust dataset on malnutrition in the UK.

NSW10 will establish the data on malnutrition in the Winter months; NSW08 covered Summer and NSW07 covered Autumn. NSW11 is planned for April 2011 to cover Spring.

Why are BAPEN’s Nutrition Screening Weeks important?

Current UK evidence on prevalence of malnutrition is small scale, patchy and not based on consistent criteria.

BAPEN’s Nutrition Screening Weeks (NSW) were established in 2007 to collect data on prevalence of malnutrition risk in adults on admission to hospitals, mental health trusts and care homes across the UK based on ‘MUST’ criteria. Additional information is also collected on nutrition policy and practice.

Four Screening Weeks are planned across all four seasons to evaluate any seasonal variations in malnutrition risk. Data from each survey will then be amalgamated to give a fuller picture of the prevalence of and practice surrounding addressing malnutrition across the UK.

What is in it for the Hospitals, Mental Health Units and Care Homes taking part?

Every Reporting Centre will receive back their own analysed data so that they can ‘benchmark’ their own prevalence data against the national picture and compare local practice. The Reports and Executive Summaries of each NSW are free to download from the BAPEN website. The full results will be presented at BAPEN Conference 2010 (November 2010, Harrogate).

NSW10 takes place 12-14 January 2010 and all information and forms required are now available freely to download on-line for hospitals, mental health units and care homes at www.bapen.org.uk/nsw10.html

How to get involved?

Register your interest by emailing the BAPEN Office bapen@bapen.org.uk with ‘Sign up for NSW10’ in the subject line and provide full contact details. A reference number will be given to be added to the appropriate forms (available to view and download on-line as stated above). It is suggested that Organisers discuss NSW10 with their line managers in advance of registration. BAPEN requests that all forms are returned by 22nd January 2010.
