BAPEN with Southampton University Hospitals Trust wins IT Innovation Award 2008 for 'MUST'

Nominated by Southampton University Hospitals Trust (SUHT), BAPEN’s ‘MUST’ (Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool) has won the IT Innovation Award at the Health Business Awards 2008 (11 December, Emirates Stadium, London).

BAPEN and the team at SUHT, led by Professor Marinos Elia (Chair of BAPEN), were commended for the development of the ‘MUST’ together with healthcare professional colleagues across the UK. The commendation was made in particular for this essential screening tool being made freely available online and it being licensed by BAPEN for use throughout the NHS via Connecting for Health.

The Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (‘MUST’) is a five-step flowchart used to identify whether adults are malnourished, or at risk of becoming malnourished. It can also highlight cases where patients are at risk of obesity. The British Dietetic Association (BDA), the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and the Registered Nursing Home Association (RNHA) support the 'MUST'. The ‘MUST’ not only allows fast and accurate identification of malnourished patients, but also contributes to the drawing up of care plans based on local policies and resources. It is intended for use in all care settings by a wide range of healthcare workers for both clinical and public health purposes. ‘MUST’ has been licensed by BAPEN for use and free access throughout the NHS in England via Connecting for Health.
