Malnutrition in the Community – One Quarter of Young Adults are at risk: BAPEN report highlights extent of issue

Today BAPEN publishes its fourth annual Nutritional Screening Week (NSW) report which reveals that malnutrition is not as commonly believed just a problem amongst the older generation but is actually also affecting 26% of those aged between 20-29 years admitted to hospital. The Report which presents the results of a UK screening survey has highlighted that whilst prevalence of malnutrition is lower than in previous surveys it was still found to affect 1 in 4 adults on admission to hospitals, more than 1 in 3 adults admitted to care homes in the previous 6 months, and up to 1 in 5 adults on admission to Mental Health Units. Most of those affected were in the high risk category. Click the link to read the full story.

It’s not only what’s on the menu that’s important but also what’s been left on the plate, says BAPEN

Hospital nutrition even more important during the Festive season. Dr Tim Bowling, Chair of BAPEN, says: “Whilst menus provided in hospital must be appealing and the food served nutritious, what is even more important is how much of the food and drink chosen by and presented to patients has actually been consumed.

BAPEN supports Hospitals and Trusts that are addressing malnutrition

‘BAPEN supports hospitals and health trusts that have instigated screening for malnutrition on admission and are reviewing and improving their nutritional care and treatment policies throughout the hospital stay and on discharge. Increased attention on malnutrition will inevitably lead to an increase in reported cases of malnutrition and should be welcomed. If malnutrition is not recognised and recorded there is no guarantee it will be treated appropriately, and furthermore, no guarantee that the information will be handed on to community health and care services so that any longer term threat to health can continue to be addressed.’

BAPEN is not surprised that 97 out of 100 GPs surveyed are not screening for malnutrition but pleased that 9 out of 10 said that the UK does not give the issue enough attention.

These organisations also agree that the nutrition information, care and treatment accessed by the adults and children they represent is often in short supply, variable in quality and lacks continuity across health and care settings.
