This week, The Lancet published a letter co-authored by our President, Dr Trevor Smith alongside colleagues on malnutrition risk in hospitalised COVID-19 patients receiving continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). The letter recognises that CPAP delivered by face mask or hood is increasingly being used in patients with COVID-19 who have been admitted to hospital, and explores the nutritional issues that can arise in such situations.
The letter recommends that healthcare professionals who have expertise in nutrition should be engaged in the assessment and care of all COVID-19 patients who receive CPAP, as well as patients who are subsequently admitted to intensive care units for mechanical ventilation. It emphasises the vital role that nutrition plays for COVID-19 patients receiving CPAP.
The letter is available to read here.
