As we move into Spring (someone should tell the weather to catch up!), it has continued to be a busy time for all members of the NNNG committee, and our annual Conference is peeking over the horizon! The NNNG Conference takes place June 20th and 21st at the Novotel, Southampton. The main day – Friday 20th June – covers the varied aspects of nutrition within nursing and healthcare, and we also have a focus on role development and career aspirations of nutrition nurse specialists. This is one not to be missed as we have two speakers with many years of experience sharing their expertise and experiences of how to develop both your role and how to step up the career ladder. A relaxed dinner will take place on the evening of 20th June, plus there will be an interactive event covering blended diets and a different way of proving IDDSI compliant drinks. Come along, join in the fun and enjoy some professional networking in a more relaxed social atmosphere!

The NNNG website has had a refresh recently, with a spot of light housekeeping. We hope you will find it easier to navigate and find the key information to support you in caring for patients receiving nutrition support. If you are a member, please visit the website and feedback if you have any further suggestions to make – we are always happy to hear from members on how to improve the functionality of the website to ensure that you can find the right information at the right time as quickly as possible!

We recently had a very successful webinar, jointly hosted by 3M, The British Journal of Nursing and the NNNG, titled ‘Nasogastric Securement – Exploring Patient and Clinical Challenges’. There were over 500 attendees, which was pretty good with it being a Monday night when it went live! You are still able to watch the webinar on demand – please visit www.nnng.org.uk to register and watch.

A short and sweet InTouch this time, but keep an eye on our website, we are always busy behind the scenes!

In February, the BPNG held a webinar reviewing the potential toxic risk of aluminium (Al) contamination in PN components and how this can be addressed in practice. It was organised in partnership with the International Clinical Nutrition Section of ASPEN (ICNS) bringing together experts from around the globe. Prof Kathy Gura (USA) and Prof Stefan Muhlebach (Switzerland) discussed the background to the US FDA mandate on Al levels, and experiences of US Nutrition Support Teams in meeting the established Al limits were shared. The webinar highlighted the need for greater quality control and international regulation of Al in PN components.

On 14th May, we ran a webinar on the management of medication in patients with challenging enteral access. Emma Wilkinson updated us on medication administration in paediatric and adult patients with enteral feeding tubes. Robbie Cord discussed the challenges of medication management in the surgical patient. Click here for further information.

Our popular study day, The Fundamentals of Parenteral Nutrition, returns in London on 5th June 2024. It is an interactive, one day, face-to-face event, led by leaders in the field, and provides an introduction to all aspects of parenteral nutrition support in adults and children. Topics covered include: indications for PN, nutritional requirements, monitoring, vascular access, stability of PN and ethics. Suitable for all members of the MDT, click here to register your interest.

The Department of Health and Social Care has issued a Medicine Supply Notification regarding an imminent shortage of Pabrinex. The BPNG and BAPEN have representatives on the multi-specialty working group to prioritise patient cohorts and develop guidance where needed. Please refer to the BPNG website, where updates will be posted on behalf of BPNG and BAPEN.
