BAPEN’s 2017 Malnutrition Matters Conference will focus on Providing Quality Nutritional Care
This year’s conference will provide a multi-disciplinary programme and symposia will cover:
Organisational Change in the NHS and its Impact on Parenteral Nutrition
Are organisational changes in the NHS moving us towards greater use of standardised approaches to parenteral nutrition? Are these changes a backwards step or just plain common-sense? Will cost pressures signal the decline of ‘bespoke’ nutrition and a renaissance of the humble ‘off the shelf’ multi-chamber bag? This symposium considers these questions for both adult and neonatal nutrition.
Estimating Nutritional Requirements – The good, the bad and the ugly
A look at the controversies surrounding the estimation of nutritional requirements from the use and abuse of stress factors to recommendations in specific conditions such as critical illness and liver disease. Featuring debates and an expert panel, we will focus on the limitations of predictive formulae and look at what we can actually achieve in practice.
Restraints
The NNNG will look at ‘securing devices’ used to secure feeding tubes used in delivering nutritional support; an overview of the products available on the market, how and when to use these products and their implications on Consent, Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards(DoLs).
Tackling Malnutrition in the Community
How is malnutrition and disease-related malnutrition diagnosed and managed in the community? What is the role of GPs in preventing hospital admission in patients with nutrition disorders? Organised by BAPEN Medical, in collaboration with GPs representing the Nutrition Interest Group within the RCGP, this symposium will address the various forms of malnutrition encountered in the community, from undernutrition to diabetes and obesity; it will explore present care and future directions to tackle this important health problem, with a major social and economic impact for both the individual and the health services.
Rehabilitation after Serious Illness – From community to the hospital and back…where?
Continuing on the theme of tackling malnutrition in the community, BAPEN Medical dedicates its second symposium to another hot topic. Acute severe illness has become an increasing social and economic burden within last decades, as mortality has constantly decreased and more patients survive to hospital discharge. Unfortunately, the more severe the acute disease and the comorbidities the patient has at hospital admission, the longer and more difficult the rehabilitation, which could take up to one or more years. This long and sinuous road will be explored (focusing on nutritional aspects of rehabilitation) by a multidisciplinary panel of experts, including Professor Paul Wischmeyer (US), who will share his experience from both sides of the net: doctor and patient.
Feed at Swallowing Risk – Modified textures
BAPEN’s Education & Training Committee will host two symposia at this year’s BAPEN Conference. This first one, feeding the dysphagic patient will offer suggestions on how to address the issues.
Nutrition and Dementia
The second BAPEN Education & Training Committee symposia will be on the clinical and practical issues around nutrition and dementia.
Integration of Health and Social Care – The implications for nutrition professionals
The four different countries in the UK have separate health systems but often a change or initiative in one country leads to changes or initiatives elsewhere – we can learn from one another. One of the main changes in healthcare in recent times has been the integration of health and social care. Each country has tackled this somewhat differently and this symposium addresses this topic with the aim of mutual learning and improvement.
Death by Chocolate – The refeeding syndrome revisited
This will be a slightly less light hearted final BAPEN symposium than has been the tradition over the last few years, never the less one that aims to be lively and thought provoking with plenty of audience participation. It will focus on guidelines and use debates, as well as an expert panel to clarify how we should actually manage the syndrome in day-to-day practice. An unmissable opportunity to put your refeeding questions to a panel of national experts.

Abstracts
Late breaking abstracts will be accepted up to Monday 11th September, 2017, Midnight, with a non-refundable fee of £24.00 that has to be paid upon submission. The fee is applicable whether the abstract is accepted or not.
Late breaking abstracts will only be presented as posters.

Pre-conference Teaching Days – Monday 20th November 2017
This traditional BAPEN Medical event will be organised this year in conjunction with BIFA and BSPGHAN and will focus on Intestinal Failure on both adult and paediatric patients.
New or controversial topics will be addressed from both age perspectives, highlighting main similarities and differences in management and outcome. From general care like management of high output stoma, going through prevention and treatment of specific metabolic and septic complications, pain and wound care and last but not least, bowel transplantation, this study day is organised as a combination of lectures and interactive case discussions addressing a multidisciplinary audience, including gastroenterologists, intensivists, surgeons, pharmacists, nutrition nurses and dietitians.
ALL WELCOME: This day is open to all Members of BAPEN Medical and BAPEN, and any clinician or healthcare professional with an interest in nutrition support, including: gastroenterologists, surgeons, intensivists, and trainees in any discipline. CPD will be applied for.
PENG are holding Pre-Conference Teaching Day for dietitians. We have an exciting programme for Dietitians to come along and discussing 'Innovative and Emerging Practices in Dietetics'. The programme will focus on: PENG Pocket Guide to Clinical Nutrition, translating updated evidence on calculating nutritional requirements and refeeding into dietetic practice, dietitians prescribing, PENG developing competencies around dietitians extended roles, and will feature original contributions from PENG members about their audit and research in practice.
