A three-part webinar series from BSNA was launched on 18 May 2022. Register here: https://bsna.co.uk/webinars, to access the on-demand sessions. They are perfect for newly appointed nutrition nurses, those needing CPD points for revalidation and appraisal, or essential revision of practice and wider knowledge. BSNA has also partnered with NNNG to provide our members with clinical workshops in 2023.
NNNG committee met in May to review our conference venue: The Hallam Centre, London. Topics on the agenda includes: Updated NG guidelines, development of an industry sponsorship policy, and review of the BAPEN EDI policy: www.bapen.org.uk/pdfs/policies-and-procedures/bapenedi-policy-2021.pdf which is to be aligned to NNNG membership and its activities. Also discussed were clinical workshop and supervision plans for 2023.
The committee welcomed Jane Fletcher, lead CNS for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, NST and newly appointed BAPEN, Nurse Executive on behalf of the NNNG, and our new NNNG committee and co-opted members.

We had tremendous interest in committee applications. All those who applied demonstrated a high level of clinical expertise. Leadership and service development achievements. As a committee we would have appointed all of the applicants to committee! We will be introducing Jess and our co-opted members at our NNNG annual conference in July 2022. Jessica, will be invited to make her introductions with an overview of her NST, clinical interests and current work streams in the NNNG's summer newsletter.
We are also excited to welcome our newly appointed co-opted members. Without whom we would not be able to undertake the work so valued by the NNNG membership. And we’re looking to co-opt further committee members soon:
Benefits of a being a co-opted committee member:
We have increased our in-person capacity due to the large number of registrations. Don’t miss your chance to sign-up!
We’ve had significant interest from industry. How fantastic to join once again in a shared voice. Some of you, will know our keynote Speaker – Mr Monty Halls, TV personality, documentary maker and author. Monty has a BBC2 documentary currently airing on Sunday evenings at 8pm: ‘Britain’s Ocean Warriors’. In addition to his newly launched book, ‘Commando’. You may ask, what has military experience got to do with nutrition nursing? Monty is a highly acclaimed public speaker, with extensive leadership experience. A rousing and reflective presentation will close our in-person day – reflecting on public service working the last two years! Onwards!
We have also extended conference registration to our military nursing and medical colleagues who work alongside us in the NHS when not deployed and the Royal Marine band members who were deployed to work as medics in Nightingale Hospitals across the UK and who supported the provision of the COVID-19 National Vaccination Programme. Welcome to the PENG column bringing you the latest from PENG this summer. We are now well and truly into 2022 and as you read this column PENG will be busy planning for our first face to face study day since 2019. Our webinar series however still continues in order to deliver regular educational opportunities, these are available free for members and non- members with a small registration fee, please look out for ways to join by following us on twitter or our newly launched Instagram page @bda_PENG.
On the June 14 we held our ‘Inspiring your Next Conference Abstract’ webinar. We had three fantastic speakers discussing how to write a high-quality abstract and successfully apply for a BDA GET grant. The aim of the webinar was to increase dietitians' confidence to share service improvement projects, audits and research results conducted in practice, and then how to apply for financial support from the BDA to further innovative clinical practice and improve patient outcomes. This webinar is available to catch up for all those that registered for the event and also PENG members on our website: www.bda.uk.com/specialist-groups-and-branches/parenteral-enteral-nutrition-specialist-group/webinars.html.
As we move into the autumn, we will continue our education webinar series looking at complex issues in nutrition support, including parenteral nutrition. Please follow us on Twitter and Instagram @bda_PENG to receive the alerts for information on these and to register.

The British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition had its first face-to-face annual meeting since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The meeting was hosted by the paediatric gastroenterology team at Birmingham, and was held in the Birmingham Conference and Events centre from April 25-27.
The three-day meeting was a great opportunity for colleagues from different disciplines to share their experience and knowledge, especially in view of the new challenges faced coming out of the pandemic. It was a huge credit to the organising team to manage such an outstanding meeting despite the current challenges.
It started with the postgraduate day, which emphasised the specific expertise of multidisciplinary team working within the speciality. The day consisted of symposia on management of complex nutritional problems in children and young adults. This included management of nutritional needs in specific situations like severe neuro-disability, chronic liver disease and allergic disorders.
There was a good variety of topics covering inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal failure, coeliac disease and chronic liver and pancreatic diseases, to cater for the broad range of disciplines represented in the audience. There was a good focus on nutrition with a good balance of management of enteral and parenteral nutrition in children with complex nutritional needs. There were also informative presentations on assessment and management of body composition in chronic illness, nutritional deficiencies in children on long term parenteral nutrition, and outcomes of children in this group. This generated a good discussion and would help influence practices in different centres. There was an active discussion on nutritional and financial implications of using standardised parenteral nutrition bags in children and associated challenges.
The meeting was accompanied with a matching social programme with an elegant gala dinner, offering an opportunity to socialise after a two-year gap.
The detailed programme and abstracts of the oral and poster presentations can be accessed on the conference website: https://bspghan.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/BSPGHAN-Annual-Meeting-Abstract-Book.pdf.

PINNT has created an award in recognition of Tracy Hill who was a volunteer and staunch supporter of PINNT for more than 23 years. Tracy was diagnosed with superior mesenteric artery syndrome and neuropathic small bowel pseudo-obstruction, leading to home parenteral nutrition (PN). Sadly, Tracy passed away in early 2022 and PINNT is proud to be launching this award in her memory.
During the 2019 Home Artificial Nutrition Week Tracy had shared her story, saying: “I’m not saying it’s easy, far from it, personally I believe mind over matter can make a big difference! Having medical conditions isn’t something I’m pleased about, nor having PN but I can’t change it, I’ve learnt to live with it and enjoy what I can do rather than what I can’t do.”
Tracy’s determination and spirit enabled her to demonstrate exceptional commitment to championing what people in similar situations could achieve. She believed that illness and artificial feeding should not define anyone, everyone should be encouraged and supported to achieve their own goals.
