PINNT is delighted that our face-to-face meetings are commencing. Our recent meeting in Leicester was a great success with people truly benefiting from meeting each other. We are looking to start other groups and introduce new groups. If you would like to know more about how you could support a group in your area, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Our Virtual Nutrition Team (VNT) have been pleased with the response to their guidance document: Swimming and other recreational water-based activities with an intravenous catheter or an enteral feeding tube. You can find out more about our VNT via this link: https://pinnt.com/About-Us/Virtual-Nutrition-Team-VNT.aspx
BAPEN members can request a copy of the guidance by emailing support@pinnt.com. Provide your full name, address and quote ‘BAPEN’ to receive a free copy

As we enter Autumn, we will take a quick look back on PENG summer activities and look towards what is still to come this year in addition to an update on enteral feeding supplies.
PENG continues to run regular webinars. In June we hosted Inspiring your next conference abstract and funding application. The aim of the webinar was to increase dietitians' confidence to share service improvement projects, audits and research results conducted in practice and then how to apply for financial support from the BDA to further innovative clinical practice and improve patient outcomes. In September our PN Lead Lisa Gemmal and ordinary member Nicky Wyer presented Parenteral Nutrition: A Discussion of complex intestinal failure patients. While IF is inherently a complex diagnosis, Lisa and Nicky, along with a panellist of highly experienced IF dietitians, work through some additional complexities, including the assessment of mental capacity and application to the court of protection. Both these webinars and more are available for members on the PENG website. Our next webinar we will be in the new year, 2023, as we have spent the summer organising our first face to face (available via live stream) which will have just happened when this edition of In Touch comes out.
The PENG Study Day held in October was entitled “The Future of Nutrition Support Dietitians: Extended and Advanced Practice”. As I write this, we are approaching this and it is already shaping up to be an exciting day with an excellent programme of speakers covering the four pillars of advanced practice, examples of these and extended roles in nutrition support across both acute and primary care, programme available here. We look forward to sharing the learnings in the coming weeks, or look back on social for some key highlights.
PENG is also looking forward to BAPEN Conference 2022 in Brighton where we will be hosting BAPEN’s first Prehabilitation Symposium, a topic that is growing in evidence base and is relevant for dietitians working across both acute and primary care.
Additionally, at BAPEN conference, we look forward to seeing our PENG 2022 Award winners present their abstracts and be awarded with their certificates. The PENG Award is a supportive educational grant which enables the awardee to present their work at national level and attend BAPEN conference. This year’s winners are:
Finally, we are delighted to announced that the PENG MSc Clinical Update Course aims to be back face to face at Queen Margaret University in June 2023. Registration will open in December, however before this there will be an opportunity for PENG members to be able to apply and win a free place. Please keep an eye on the PENG Website and socials @BDA_PENG as this became available in November for 4 weeks.
Dietitians’ Views on Parenteral Nutrition (PN) Competencies
PENG are considering developing competencies for those dietitians who formulate and monitor patients on PN. We would like members’ thoughts on this and what should be included. Members have indicated they would benefit from standard competencies. Currently there are some departments already using competencies and so this questionnaire is to get an idea of what is already being used and whether this could be standardised for all dietitians. Please share your views, this is a great opportunity to develop and standardize competencies that all dietitians can use. Please click on the link to complete the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/J6V7MXN.
This year has seen a number of challenges for dietitians in accessing enteral feeding supplies, including oral nutrition supplements and ancillaries, for our patients in both acute and primary care settings. PENG and BANS recognised this as a potential significant risk to patient care earlier in the year and started work on gathering data to highlight the extent of the issues effecting enteral feeding teams across the UK. A report of the findings is now available on the BAPEN News. PENG is committed to providing the professional expertise to represent dietitians, to highlight the significant risks that these shortages are causing and to try and find solutions to mitigate these. We are working with BANS, BAPEN, BDA and specialist groups, DHSC and patient bodies on this matter, so please continue to look out for further communications from PENG, BANS and BAPEN. We would encourage you also to use the virtual HEF group where this topic, in addition to others relevant to Home Enteral Feeding, is discussed. The group is always keen to grow the multidisciplinary team members so please share the link here to join the group with your local medical, nursing and AHP colleagues.
We have recently recruited a new student committee member, Rhiannon Bullen, to the PENG committee. She has been providing valuable support with our social media communications and ensuring that the student voice is represented within all PENG activities. If you are a PENG member and would like to get more involved with PENG, we specifically have a vacancy for website co-ordinator, for more information please do get in touch: peng@bda.uk.com.
