Happy New Year readers! I hope you all had a well-deserved and restful festive break after a busy 2022. After two years of virtual events, I was pleased to hear of the success of the in-person BAPEN Annual Conference last November in Brighton. The Nutrition Society exhibited and sponsored the ‘IBD and Nutrition in Adults’ symposium with their newly established journal Gut Microbiome. Congratulations to all the organisers on a wonderful event!
The Society has continued to strengthen its relationships within the medical community over the last year. In addition to exhibiting at the Association for the Study of Obesity Congress (7-8 September 2022), the Society also hosted a joint event with the British Association for Cancer Research on 11 May 2022. Given the substantive evidence base around the roles of several nutrients and dietary patterns in the pathogenesis and progression of cancer, this event bought together the UK Nutrition and Cancer Research community together to discuss ways of best practice and identify opportunities in the patient’s clinical pathway for nutritional trials and interventions.
I was delighted to be invited to speak at the British Society of Immunology Congress in Liverpool in December 2022 on diet, immune health and the microbiome. With over 1500 congress attendees, the role of nutrition in immune function was a clear interest to the scientific and clinical audience there, with two popular parallel sessions taking place on nutritional immunology and immunometabolism. Also of particular concern to medical professionals is understanding how food structure and processing affect the bio-accessibility of nutrients and non-nutrient bioactive food components, and the potential consequences for health, both adverse and beneficial, of manipulating food structure. At The Nutrition Society’s annual Winter Conference, which took place on 24 and 25 January 2023 this year, leading experts in food science and nutrition discussed the role of the food matrix and the impact of food processing and changing dietary patterns on health.
Finally, some exciting news as The Nutrition Society launches its new subscription-based learning platform, The Nutrition Society Academy. The new platform aims to upskill Nutrition and Healthcare Professionals by providing regular, evidence-based webinars, workshops and courses to develop nutrition science knowledge and enhance professional skills within the field.
I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that BAPEN members are always welcome to attend the Society’s upcoming events and conferences, whether Society members or not. The latest events can be viewed here.
All my very best,
Caroline
