Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a good festive break after a busy end to 2019. Myself and my colleagues thoroughly enjoyed attending the BAPEN Annual Conference in Belfast last November and having the opportunity to meet so many of you – a fantastic few days of thought-provoking lectures, networking, and of course Irish craic. Congratulations to all the organisers on a wonderful conference.

December saw the Nutrition Society’s Winter Conference taking place, hosted for the first time in collaboration with BAPEN and the British Society of Gastroenterology on the topic of ‘Diet and Digestive Disease’. This was the largest event BAPEN and the Society have collaborated on for quite some time, and it was great to explore the many connections between nutrition science and gastroenterology both inside and outside of the lecture hall through the Society’s archive. Sheila Merceica, the Society’s Archivist, constructed an exhibition charting the development of UK nutrition organisations over the past 80 years and the history of BAPEN and the Society’s relationship, which was also very well received. Thanks to all BAPEN committee members for their time, reflections, and support in the construction of the exhibition.

Upcoming Nutrition Society events

It was good to see so much interest in the Society’s publications and training offering during the BAPEN conference where the Society had a stand. A reminder that the 3rd edition of the Society’s bestselling textbook Introduction to Human Nutrition is now available to purchase in print or digital format with a membership discount available via the Society’s website. Additionally, the Society are delighted to announce the launch of a new journal in partnership with Cambridge University Press – The Gut Microbiome – currently accepting submissions.

BAPEN members are also very welcome to attend the Society’s upcoming events and conferences, whether Society members or not. The Nutrition Society’s Training Academy offers a number of 1-hour long webinars exploring a range of different nutrition related topics that are available to watch live or as a pre-record. Available topics include ‘Disorders of the digestive tract and probiotic use- dispelling myths’ and ‘Nutrition and the ageing immune system’.

Upcoming conferences that may also be of interest include the Irish Section’s conference on ‘Nutrition, health and ageing’, 17-19 June 2020, University of Limerick, Ireland, and the Summer Conference on ‘Protein: sources, benefits and global challenges’ which this year will take place in Aberdeen, 13-16 July.

Nutrition in the medical community

Work continues on the review of the nutrition curriculum for undergraduate medical education and I hope to bring you more news on this front in the new year.

All my very best,

Bernadette
