BAPEN extends its huge congratulations to Carolyn Wheatley for being awarded with an MBE in the King’s New Year’s Honours List for 2025.
The title recognises Carolyn’s extensive contribution to supporting patients with intestinal failure. Carolyn’s advocacy work in this field spans almost four decades and is rooted in her own experience as a person with intestinal failure who is fed intravenously with parenteral nutrition. BAPEN is delighted to see that Carolyn’s fierce commitment to improve standards of nutritional care and patient experience has been recognised in this way.

BAPEN President, Nick Thompson, says: “Clinical Nutrition Teams are at the heart of delivering excellent and safe nutritional care to those who need it in hospitals and also in the community. In some hospitals around the UK nutrition teams may have gone through change or are being set up and so need some support to develop and flourish. BAPEN are delighted to provide a 3-day residential course for around 5 or 6 hospital nutrition teams, including all specialities to learn together and develop as a team. The course is being held in Edgbaston with good communication links and all costs are being met by BAPEN apart from bed & breakfast accommodation for nutrition team members. The course faculty are national experts in their field and team development sessions will be led by InspireChange who have huge experience and expertise, especially within the NHS.”

The BAPEN Sustainability SIG has created a resource hub for sustainability to address the growing need for more responsible practices within clinical nutrition. This initiative aligns with their broader strategy to ensure safe, timely and appropriate nutritional care for all individuals.
Users of the hub will find it as a helpful resource for integrating sustainability into their daily practices. It includes signposting to wider NHS resources and other specialties that have made progress with sustainable healthcare. The hub also offers case studies and success stories, providing practical examples of how others have successfully implemented sustainable practices. Additionally, the collaborative opportunities available through the hub allow users to connect with peers, share insights, and develop innovative solutions to common challenges.
