With only a few more weeks left before our conference in Belfast this November, we are excited to share with you highlights from the scientific programme. In particular our Teaching Day on Monday 25th November (the day before the main conference). The day will provide a ‘state of the art’ update on clinical nutritional management of sick patients. We have some excellent speakers who will cover a range of subjects including the gastrointestinal physiology, fluid balance, refeeding syndrome, line placements, as well as monitoring patients on home parenteral nutrition and referral for small bowel transplantation. Topics will be covered using formal talks and interactive case presentations by a variety of doctors, dietitians and nurse specialists within the field. I am sure the day will appeal to anyone with a developing or established interest in clinical nutrition and will be a great success.
For the main conference, we are organising two symposia. The first one will debate, for the first time in this format, sports nutrition and how could such a recently developed science like feeding the athletes be applied into rehabilitation after an acute severe disease or in people living with comorbidities in the community. Specifically, how to optimise muscle function and mass in illness.
Our other symposium, organised in collaboration with the Nutrition Society, will explore new frontiers in the science of microbiome and novel nutrition interventions. From faecal transplant to the ketogenic diet and to the long-term effects of early parenteral nutrition on cognitive performance, this mind-blowing symposium will help us to better understand some ancillary, yet complex interactions between our gut, nutrition route and diet composition and how is the brain interplaying these.
We strongly hope to see you all there and that you will take this unique opportunity to listen and interact with our internationally recognised experts.

PENG had their study day focusing on home enteral feeding at the beginning of October in Birmingham, which was really well attended and resulted in much debate and discussion. Thank you to Sean White for leading on this for PENG and all of those who contributed to the day to make it such a success. The slides from the day will soon be available to share and a summary of the day will appear in the next edition of PENG’s e-PENlines.
If you are a PENG member please don’t forget that we will have our AGM on day 2 of BAPEN conference where we will provide an update for 2019 and also what is coming in 2020. We are also looking for new committee members, so please get in touch if this is something you are interested in peng@bda.uk.com (or visit our website where there is more detail on the roles available). Please come and visit us on our stand at BAPEN conference because we will still be running our photograph competition, which closes Dec 12th 2019, but more information about this can be found here: www.peng.org.uk/pdfs/news/peng-photo-competition-2019.pdf
We are just evaluating the recent PN-focused survey and so open to share the results in the coming months, meanwhile there is currently a survey, closing 31st December 2019, where we are inviting professionals who work with people receiving enteral nutrition to complete an online survey about the use of water in enteral nutrition. So please do share this with colleagues because the more who take part the better and we will share the findings next year.
We are pleased to say that the PENG Pocket Guide to Clinical Nutrition is out and orders are being taken so please click here for more detail. Lastly the 2020 PENG Clinical Update Course is now open to register on, so we are calling for all dietitians to visit our website and share those with colleagues who may be interested.
Congratulations to the 5 lucky PENG members who have won a place on the 2020 Course – the names have just been announced!
