BAPEN Welcomes New President, Dr Nick Thompson

Nick is a Consultant Gastroenterologist in Newcastle upon Tyne and joins the Executive team after being a BAPEN member for many years.

Reflecting on his new position, Nick commented:

“I am very much looking forward to becoming the new BAPEN President, although slightly intimidated, especially following Trevor Smith who was so successful in leading the charity. BAPEN had its largest, and perhaps best, Conference in Edinburgh, with over 700 delegates, and we will look to build on this for next year; BIFA produce outstanding guidance and these are now easier to find on our new, much-improved website and that will continue to develop over the year.

Sustainability is one of our three main strategies and the development of a specialist interest group in that area is crucial to help bring change – please do get involved if you are interested.

There are parts of the UK where nutritional care is not as good as it should be and BAPEN will look to see how we can help support regional nutrition networks and to help in the development of hospital nutrition teams.

BAPEN demonstrates what multidisciplinary working can achieve, it’s in the charity’s DNA, and so I am keen for BAPEN to further develop working with others for the common aim of improving nutritional care across the UK – this includes with other specialist societies and associations, Royal Colleges and even political parties so that we can try to influence future health policies in a year of political change.”

BAPEN would like to extend its sincere gratitude to Dr Trevor Smith who has been at the helm of the BAPEN ship over the last few years and has encapsulated strong leadership. Trevor has been a fantastic President, working effectively with others to improve care in the UK and drive much-needed change.

Resource Launched for Healthcare Professionals to Optimise Nutritional Care for Patients

BAPEN, jointly with PINNT, has launched a new resource for healthcare professionals which explains the promises made to patients – adults in hospital and the community who are receiving oral, enteral or parenteral nutrition support – regarding the care they should expect to receive.

The resource includes a checklist for healthcare professionals to refer to, to ensure they are meeting these promises to patients and correctly implementing high quality, nutritional care.

This document supplements resource launched in August for patients, which aims to empower people receiving artificial nutrition to understand what they can expect from the care they receive. To access the Quality Standards resource for patients, please visit the BAPEN website, or the PINNT website.
