You are invited to the annual Southampton Practical Nutrition course that provides 3 days of interactive teaching focusing on the importance of nutrition in health care. This MDT focused practical course will provide an excellent basic knowledge of nutritional requirements, how artificial nutritional support can be provided, nutritional management of patients with different diseases as well as the management of intestinal failure and beyond. 

Course Aims

The aim of the course is to provide a broad foundation of knowledge in clinical nutrition, nutritional assessment and nutrition support. Whilst primarily aimed towards trainees the course is relevant for consultants in all specialties, general practitioners and allied health professionals with an interest in nutrition and intestinal failure. The course will address the major areas of the Joint Royal Colleges Postgraduate Training Board (JRCTPB) curriculum in basic nutrition for gastroenterology trainees. The course is interactive with a variety of case-based lectures and practical workshops, a quiz and debate. To facilitate this delegate places are limited to 30.

Course Objectives

  • To provide an understanding of the basic science of clinical nutrition · To recognise malnutrition
  • To provide a structured approach in assessing the indications for nutritional support
  • To calculate nutritional requirements and formulate a prescription for enteral or parenteral support
  • To increase awareness of the role of the nutrition support team
  • To be familiar with different types of enteral tubes, possible complications and how to manage these
  • To assess and manage patients with intestinal failure associated with short bowel syndrome, enteric fistulae, dysmotility, mechanical obstruction and extensive mucosal disease
  • To be aware of indications for and complications of parenteral nutrition
  • To be aware of the impact of obesity, bariatric surgery and possible complications
  • To be aware of the ethical dilemmas around providing nutritional support

  • Speakers include multidisciplinary members of the Southampton Nutrition Support and Intestinal Failure Service, as well as invited experts from other Intestinal Failure centres.
