Key points from the survey included:

  • Clear guidance is needed on discharge planning and training for patients returning home on PN as many respondents reported a lack of confidence in this area
  • There is good awareness of clinical guidance about PN amongst HCPs: 95% of HCPs would consider PN for patients with a non-functioning or inaccessible GI tract and 76% would consider PN for malnourished patients with an unsafe or inadequate oral/enteral intake
  • There is still a need for more nutrition support teams in hospitals – only 65% of respondents said their hospital had a nutrition support team and only 55% of NSTs had responsibility for PN
  • More training is needed on the use of PN amongst all HCPs to expand knowledge and confidence
