This honorary post working alongside the current Honorary Secretary, Dr Charlotte Rutter, with a normal tenure of six to twelve months, to allow the successful individual to learn about BAPEN and gradually take on more responsibility, leading to taking over as BAPEN Honorary Secretary for a three-year term from 1st May 2027. The usual tenure can be adapted to suit candidates if, following discussion, a longer period of time is needed to develop into the role. It is hoped this, with informal mentorship will help open opportunities to a wider diversity of candidates.

They attend BAPEN Executive, Council and Trustee meetings and work closely with the BAPEN Secretariat to develop and approve agendas and minutes and are a key link for the office on day-to-day matters, committee chairs and external partners.

The BAPEN Secretary has executive responsibility for membership, equality, diversity and inclusion, and monitoring of the implementation of our strategy, and is supported by the secretariat team in all these areas. BAPEN maintains a mix of virtual and face to face meetings with short monthly virtual and quarterly in-person Executive, Council and Board of Trustees meetings.

During Charlotte’s term the membership has grown to over 1000 members for the first time and the regional representative structure has been revised and relaunched. It is an exciting time to join BAPEN as we look forwards to the future, having implemented a 5-year strategy focussing on Knowledge, Reach and Sustainability. As an organisation we aspire to continue to deliver on these themes for our members.
