BAPEN welcomes recognition of home artificial nutrition in Parliament

BAPEN News

BAPEN welcomes the recent recognition of home artificial nutrition (HAN) during a House of Commons Business of the House session. The question, raised by MP Alex Baker, reflects the growing awareness of the vital role HAN plays in supporting patients who require specialised nutritional support outside of hospital settings.

We hope that Ms. Baker’s engagement with the issue will spark further parliamentary activity, such as securing a Westminster Hall debate to explore the needs and challenges of those reliant on HAN. We welcome the opportunity to support any such initiatives, offering expertise and insight on the value of HAN and the needs of the HAN community.

Dr Nick Thompson, BAPEN President, commented,

“We are pleased to see home artificial nutrition brought to the attention of Parliament. People who rely on HAN can face hurdles in accessing care and support, and we are hopeful that this mention is a positive stepping stone toward greater recognition of their needs. We look forward to continuing to engage with MPs to ensure these patients’ nutritional needs are not overlooked.”

Carolyn Wheatley, Chair of PINNT, a support & advocacy group for people on HAN, stated,

“I’m delighted that a PINNT member, Victor Day, has brought home artificial nutrition to the attention of his local MP. It is so important that we continue to advocate for nutrition support for people outside of hospital settings, and we hope to see this momentum continue.”
