The workshop is aimed at members of the MDT and colleagues involved in the care of people living with MND.
The workshop will explore the importance of diet and nutrition, introducing current research in this important area and the significance of diet in providing the best care. You will consider the risk factors and learn about ways patients are screened to monitor their nutritional status. You will explore managing dysphagia and the ways nutrition can be maintained from oral nutrition techniques through to gastrostomy placements and considerations for it. The workshop will provide an outline of how to effectively steer people through the challenging decisions about having a gastrostomy tube and the enablers or barriers to decision making, while addressing the emotional response of this patient group.
Finally, you will have the opportunity to get hands-on in a practical session from thickener examples, gastrotomy tubes, cutlery and moulds. The day will close with real life case study discussions outlining nutrition challenges and engage in problem solving, alongside an ‘ask the panel’ question and answer session.
