Experiences and views of support services for people living at home with an enteral tube: It’s time to listen and take action

BAPEN and the PNG SIG have launched a report on the experiences and views of support services for people living at home with an enteral tube, addressing a central question: What do people with enteral tubes and their carers need from support services to help them manage confidently at home?

Drawing on the results of a nationwide survey, the report shines a light on both practical and personal challenges – from training quality and equipment provision – to confidence building, emotional adjustment, and the need for consistent, joined-up care.

Based on these insights, we outline six key recommendations to improve the transition from hospital to home, ensuring that home enteral nutrition (HEN) patients receive the right support at the right time.

Dr Nick Thompson, BAPEN President, commented,

“Enteral feeding can be life-changing – and with the right support, it can be managed safely and confidently at home. Our new BAPEN report highlights what patients and carers need to manage at home effectively, and where we have real opportunities to strengthen care and support. Together, we can work to improve care, communication, and confidence and ensure person-centred care is the standard. I encourage you to read the report and consider how we can all play a part in delivering better support for people living with enteral feeding at home.”
