BAPEN marks the first CIPO / PIPO Awareness Day

Other News

BAPEN is pleased to support the first-ever CIPO / PIPO Awareness Day, taking place on 21st March 2026. The day shines a spotlight on Chronic Intestinal Pseudo Obstruction (CIPO) and Paediatric Intestinal Pseudo Obstruction (PIPO) – very rare and serious gastrointestinal dysmotility disorders for which many people rely on enteral or parenteral nutrition as part of their ongoing management.

Despite its severity, awareness remains extremely limited, often leading to delayed diagnosis and significant challenges for patients and families.

As a leading voice in championing best practice in nutrition care, BAPEN is proud to raise awareness among our members, deepen understanding of these under‑recognised conditions, and highlight the vital work PORT does for an under‑served patient community.

The awareness day is led by the Pseudo Obstruction Research Trust (PORT), the only UK charity dedicated to funding research in CIPO (alongside severe dysmotility and subsequent intestinal failure). PORT was founded in memory of Emily Jasmine, who sadly passed away in 2005 as a result of CIPO complications. Her birthday – 21st March – now marks CIPO / PIPO Awareness Day, creating a moment for the community, clinicians and advocates to come together in her memory.
